What if I have dietary restrictions or allergies?

We do provide substitutions for vegetarians but not for any other dietary restrictions or allergies. Please be sure and let us know if you (or anyone in your group) has a dietary restriction (e.g. vegetarian, diabetic, allergy, etc.) when you purchase your tickets. Based on the information provided at the time of purchasing tickets, we will have your tastings prepared accordingly.

Are there vegetarian options on the tour?

Yes, all tours offer alternative tasting options for vegetarians. Please let us know if you are a vegetarian when you purchase your tickets.

What type of food is served on the tour?

The food we eat on our tours is provided by ethnic eateries, specialty food shops, and local restaurants. For a better idea of what types of eateries we visit, you can find a list of the food tasting locations on our tour product pages.

How much food is served on the food tour?

Our tours serve enough food that for most participants, lunch afterwards is not necessary. With the combination of drink and food tastings along with breaks for architectural, cultural, and historical insight, most participants are comfortably full after our food tours.

Should I eat anything before coming?

We recommend that you eat a light meal before joining us for the tours. The amount of food sampled on the tours is significant enough that many people delay or skip lunch afterwards, or will opt for a later dinner depending on the tour time.

Are any beverages served on the tour?

Water is provided on all our tours. To know if a tour includes alcoholic beverages, please visit the individual tour pages to know more about it. We also provide substitutes for people who do not consume alcohol.

Are there non-alcoholic options?

Yes! If we know in advance, we will do our best to make appropriate non-alcoholic substitutions for you on the tours.

Do I have to purchase tickets in advance?

Yes, advance ticket purchase is required. Events typically sell out quickly. To maximize your chances of getting the date, time, and number of tickets you prefer, please book well in advance.

If a food tour is sold out, can I get on a waiting list?

We do not provide a waiting list. If a date and time is sold out, there is always a chance that we will add an additional tour on that day. Please contact us or email us to let us know what date you are interested in if you do not see availability.

Are tour guide gratuities included in the price?

By The Sidewalk Food Tours does not include gratuities in the cost of the tours. Gratuities are greatly appreciated, although not mandatory. The standard gratuity in the service industry is 15%-20%. If you had a great time, gratuities are accepted by our tour guides.

What is your cancellation policy?

All By The Sidewalk Food Tours are 100% REFUNDABLE, up to 1 hour before departure for a nominal fee, from our partner TicketGuardian, based on their rules & regulations. When you purchase your tickets for one of By The Sidewalk’s Food Tours, you’ll have the option to opt-in to protect tickets or opt-out of coverage. Your choice, your comfort.

If you choose NOT to protect your tickets, they will be non-refundable. However, if you notify By The Sidewalk at least 48 hours in advance, your tickets can be converted to an e-Certificate or exchanged for a new date (based on availability) – for no charge.

If I am bringing an infant/very young child, do I need to purchase a ticket for them?

You do not need to purchase a ticket for a child below 3 years of age. However, please do let us know if you will be attending with child when you purchase tickets in the Notes section.

Do I need to purchase a ticket if I’m not eating?

Yes- all guests must purchase a ticket whether they plan to partake in the food tastings or not. Non-paying individuals will not able to join the experience. The ticket fees help cover the costs of all the food samplings and also to pay for your tour guide(s), who are offering valuable commentary on history, architecture, culture and the restaurants during our neighborhood food experiences.

Is there parking near the tour meeting point?

Specific parking details are included in the meeting location directions after purchasing ticket(s) with location, pricing, and hours. Please note that we suggest public transport, since parking options are often inconvenient (due to maximum parking time allowed and cost).

Do the tours or events start and end at the same place?

The events all end within a few blocks of the starting point. Your guide will be happy to assist with directions at the end of the event.

What happens if it rains or snows?

The tours are held in rain, shine and snow. In the event of inclement weather, we will be able to go inside many of the establishments on the tour. However, we advise to check the weather conditions for your tour day and dress appropriately (get umbrellas if necessary).

How much walking is involved? Is it a fast-paced tour?

Tours generally last between 2.5-3.5 hour depending on the tour route and number of stops. Participants can expect to walk around 1.5 miles and to be standing or walking for a majority of the time. We walk at a moderate pace and provide a few sit-down locations on all our tours to accommodate resting period. The tour is suitable for all fitness levels.

Are bathrooms available during the tour?

Yes, bathrooms are available during all experiences at selected food-tasting locations. Your guide will help with the directions when you are on the tour.

Can I shop during the tour?

We ask that you please wait to shop until after the tour so that we can stay on our food-tasting schedule and continue with the informative tour and food tastings in a timely manner. The tours are on a schedule to arrive at each tasting location so it’s important to stay on schedule so the food is freshly prepared for the participants. There is a surprise for you at the end of the tour. So wait for your guide to reveal it to you before you decide to go back to your favorite shops/locations to shop.

What about taking children on the tour?

While we offer both adolescent and children tickets, the tours range 2.5-3.5 hours in length and some children have a limited attention span and therefore the tour may not be appropriate for some of them. Parents, who know their children best, should assess the situation individually. Since there is a lot of standing and walking, please consider this when deciding whether the tour is appropriate for your child. Can I bring my pet along?

Due to various food establishments we visit, pets of any kind are not allowed.

Do we only walk around and sample food?

Absolutely not! By The Sidewalk Food Tours combines architectural commentary, historical facts, local culture and culinary insight into a unique 3-hour experience. Imagine walking through vibrant neighborhoods, eating our local artisan’s most delicious foods while learning the neighborhoods from real locals.

Are cameras allowed on the tour?

Yes. Cameras and filming are allowed during the tour. We strongly encourage participants to take photos during the tour.

Do the tours have anything to offer a native person?

Definitely! Many of our attendees are native residents of the area/from nearby areas. Locals often join us to learn about the great food finds in the neighborhood that have been under their noses the entire time! Can I book a private group tour?

Yes! We offer private tours based on availability, for groups of 6 or more. Head to our Private Group Tours page to fill out and submit a Private Group Tour Request Form. A member of our team will respond to you within 24h.
